We love the layered look Ruchi created here.  It is modern but also interesting, and a little playful with its small bursts of color.  Sophistication and personality meet in the middle in this Brooklyn, NY home as featured in Architectural Digest, Spain.

Get to know Ruchi a little better by reading our Q&A below.

What do you become most focused on with when designing?

There are so many details and so much work that goes into designing a beautiful space. I have been always obsessed by the layout. In NYC, every inch is so critical.  From my survey of the space, creating the best possible flow of the house is what I really obsess about. Close to the layout is the furniture selection and the shape, scale and lines of the pieces. They can really define the uniqueness of families in one home vs another.

Tell us something people don’t know about you that surprises them.

I used to work in finance before being an interior designer.

Ruchi nailed the sleepy time vibes in this ultra soft and coxy dream space.  Wallpaper by Cole and Sons really ties it all together.  Photography by Daniel Wang

What is your approach to options? Do you like to show your clients many options or do you like to go in with one clear favorite?

Many times, clients find it hard to articulate what they are looking for. In those cases, I present up to three options, so they have something to choose from and don't feel overwhelmed with choices at the same time.

How do you stay inspired?

Inspiration pre-Covid for me came from Industry events and travelling. During this pandemic time, I have derived so much inspiration from nature, Instagram and my own growing up years. Digging deep into the archives has brought forward a new reserve of inspiration I was able to tap into.

What do you love the most about being an IC member?

I love IC because it gives me a sense of community and it’s such a supportive and positive community. It’s very valuable to me.

Can you share an experience about a minor mishap that has come up in a project and how you handled that situation?

I made the famous NYC elevator mistake... For one of my projects, the sofa I ordered was too big to fit inside the elevator. We had to call the remedy team and get it fixed. It is embarrassing and a reminder to always check this basic critical data.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve gotten from fellow Collaber?

There are many. There have been so many golden nuggets shared, that its hard to mention one. The business experiences, the trade resources, mistakes and learnings, areas of success; I have taken in so much from IC.

What design challenge has come up for you in a project that you were able to turn around into a unique opportunity?

I was working on a typical 5x8 bathroom and the clients wanted a double sink. They were prepared to hear that it was impossible, but I made it happen by simply turning the direction of the toilet 90 degrees and replacing the existing swing door to a pocket door. That's how nerdy and happy I feel with layout.
