What is your idea of a perfectly designed space?

A perfectly designed space starts with the right proportions, scale and balance. From there when pieces and elements are layered that trigger happiness and joy in those that live there, the space feels just right.

What is your greatest extravagance when designing a project?

I prioritize using the highest quality materials when designing a space. If we have to skimp in some areas that won't affect the overall design, it is worth splurging on high quality finishes, textiles and original art whenever possible for maximum impact.

What do you consider the most overrated design trend or rule?

Black windows! I'm sorry modern farmhouse fans but I have a real pet peeve about this. I love black windows when they are appropriately scaled and fit the aesthetic properly in a modern, well designed house. But when you stick black double hung windows in an existing home that wasn't designed for it, to me it looks like a haunted house.

The last few years have been quite interesting in how our business has changed. What do you consider your greatest achievement in managing all this?

The pandemic coincided with a big transition for my business. I had previously operated through the now defunct Homepolish. The influx of work the pandemic created gave me the opportunity to redefine my business and serve my clients in my own way. I am proud and excited about the way I've been able to tailor the way I work for great outcomes for my clients.

If you were to die and come back as an object or space, what would it be?

The front porch of my family home in the White Mountains. It's where everyone gathers, relaxes and spends the best family time together while looking at breathtaking mountain views.

What is your most treasured space or possession in your home?

I have to say my dog! 🐾 He is the one thing that can make any tough day or situation feel better for everyone in the house.

What is your motto?

Don't sweat the small stuff. I used to do this regularly and it eats away at your well being. When coffee spills all over me on the way to a client meeting, I say to myself "did someone die?" No.

What is your current state of mind?

My life is full of some pretty tough challenges right now. I'm working hard to stay in the moment and pay attention to small joys and victories. Luckily my design work is my sanity. It feeds my creative soul and gives me strength to get through hard things.

What do you value most in your clients?

Clients that put their trust in me to always act in their best interest. I focus a lot of time and energy at the beginning of a project to cultivate the relationship and build that trust. Projects go much better when the trust is there.

Who are your favorite artist, architect and designer?

When I was younger, I discovered a book by the architect Hugh Newell Jacobsen about his work in the late 80's, early 90's. At the time it was very different than design trends that were current and popular with much cleaner lines, simpler detailing and timeless design. It inspired me then and still does when I look back at that book.
